Assignment Manager / Broadcast Supervisor
Company: Position Type: Full Time
FLSA Status: Exempt Grade
Purpose:
The Assignment Manager / Broadcast Supervisor is responsible for recognizing, assigning and coordinating all broadcast coverage needs, including supervising all reporters and field crews while on assignment, and approving reporter/producer broadcast scripts for air daily. The Assignment Manager assists reporters and producers with story development and structure, and coordinates logistics as coverage needs demand.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Functions:
Coordinate with Multimedia Content Manager and participate in editorial and futures planning meetings
Special emphasis on working with reporters and producers on story treatment
Dispatch News teams to news stories
Create, gather, develop, confirm, and set up news coverage using multiple resources and platforms
Copy edit newscast scripts and reporter stories as well as copy for digital platforms, as needed
Track and communicate development of news stories and events
Prioritize daily broadcast assignments to best meet department goals
Post assignments in newsroom, providing specific details and updates for all assignments
Manage logistics for assignments, as needed
Answer telephone calls and emails from the public and viewers
Maintain planning calendar
Fill in for Multiplatform Content Manager, if necessary
Collaborate with Network Assignment Desks and other affiliates via phone and email, as needed
FTP and/or feed video to field teams, affiliates, sister stations and/or the Network, as requested
Post and update stories on the station’s digital platforms
Communicate directly with the Digital team during breaking news
Offer positive leadership as a member of the news team, working to continue the strategic and budgetary goals of the department
Perform other job‐related duties as assigned
Work morning, evening, weekends, or holidays, as required
REQUIREMENTS:
Job Requirements
Experience:
5 years experience in broadcast News
1 year experience working on an Assignment Desk
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to write clearly and accurately; great grammar
Excellent communication skills
Demonstrate solid news judgment
Maintain strong journalistic ethics; maintain professional and ethical conduct at the station and in the community
Strong initiative and attention to detail
Demonstrate leadership through training and mentoring less experienced staff members
Extensive knowledge of news gathering operations and procedures
Advanced level knowledge newsroom software (ENPS)
Basic knowledge of web posting software & content management systems (Clickability)
Strong research skills, including conducting online research using various search engines
Ability to stay current with national and local news/weather
Advanced knowledge of social media & digital platforms
Ability to meet tight deadlines and work well under pressure
Knowledge of television market, geography and issues
Ability to maintain multiple modes of communication and coordinate multiple issues during breaking news and other stressful situations
Willing to work flexible hours and work well with coworkers
Ability to work independently with little supervision
Ability to remain positive and foster a positive work environment
Education:
Bachelor’s degree; Communications, Journalism, or related field required
Licensing/Certifications:
Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
Working Conditions:
Duties are performed mostly indoors in an office environment
Work includes sitting for prolonged periods
Ability to lift and carry 10‐25 lbs. for short distances
Occasional exposure to atmospheric conditions
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to stand, walk, talk, hear, use hands and fingers, reach, grab, balance, handle or feel, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; regularly sit, talk and hear
Some weekends, evenings, and holidays required
