Technical Operations Specialist


Specialists staff the Technical Operations Center where they act as primary quality control agents for audio for CPR’s three program services. They monitor and troubleshoot audio playout, routing, and transmission systems to ensure that correct audio that meets CPR quality standards is being broadcast. They are CPR’s experts on our automation software and also have deep troubleshooting abilities in numerous other systems related to audio playout. They provide support for other departments in their interactions with these systems, responding to emergencies as well as routine help requests. Specialists are required to take on-call shifts on a rotating basis to respond to off air emergencies during overnight and weekend hours.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for monitoring, programming, and troubleshooting of audio playout, routing, and transmission systems. Takes action to prevent potential problems.
  • Programs automation clocks and logs, makes regular daily changes to logs, and makes dynamic log changes for breaking news and other special programming. Loads and assists in loading audio into playout systems.
  • Acts as first responder for studio, audio playout, and off-air issues. Troubleshoots such issues to prevent impairments, or to quickly restore audio if in the midst of an off-air issue. When on-call, acts as primary support for TOC Operators when such issues exceed their expertise.
  • Assists in developing and/or improving processes and protocols to meet the above responsibilities.
  • Assists engineering and other departments with daily monitoring of and reporting on broadcast systems.
  • Acts as live board operator during breaking news events and membership drives as needed.
  • Makes basic audio edits to prepare audio for air and assists in the daily production of promotional materials for syndicated programs.
  • Available to work nonstandard hours, including late night, weekend, and holiday hours. Technical Operations Center staff are essential personnel and may be required to work even when the CPR offices are closed.
  • Must participate in an on-call rotation to respond to off air emergencies during evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday hours. During on call shifts, specialist must carry remote access kit, stay within range of their cellular service to be able to receive emergency paging and phone calls, and be able to arrive at CPR within 45 minutes when emergency circumstances necessitate.


Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Experience with and understanding of audio playout, routing, and transmission systems and software is required. Experience with Zetta Automation would be great.
  • Experience troubleshooting studio and basic computer issues and providing basic studio support is required.
  • Experience operating a studio control board and audio software for live broadcasting is required.
  • Must be competent in using Windows workstations, remote access software, and office productivity software. Ability to learn new software systems quickly is also essential.
  • Knowledge of public radio programming and public radio listener expectations is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of FCC regulations for radio broadcasting is highly desirable. Specialists are required to pass the Society of Broadcast Engineers Certified Radio Operator exam within one year of start date.
  • Must have ability to stay calm, think clearly, act strategically, and prioritize tasks during emergencies.
  • Must have adequate hearing to make audio quality determinations, adequate vision to read user access panels on broadcast electronic components, and physical mobility and dexterity to access electronic devices and wiring in standard server racks.
  • Specialists must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
